Cable Modems

Cable Modems Cable Modems are devices that enable to connect a PC to the Cable Television line. Usually, a high speed cable modem is provided when you subscribe for the cable access service. You cannot just purchase a high speed cable modem and install it.

My articles “What is a modem? “ and “ Troubleshooting a Modem “enlightened you on modems in general but there are various types of modems and in this article I would like to discuss specifically on “Cable Modems”.

Cable Modems

Cable Modems are devices that enable to connect a PC to the Cable Television line. Its data rate is much faster than the regular telephone modems, ISDN Modems, and DSL Modems. You can also add a high speed cable modem to a set-top box that provides channels for internet access on the Television Set. Usually, a high speed cable modem is provided when you subscribe for the cable access service. You cannot just purchase a high speed cable modem and install it.

When connecting the high speed cable modem, you need to make two connections, one to the cable wall outlet and another to the computer or the set-top box. Cable Modems can be an external device or it can be integrated within a computer or a set-top box. Cable modems can be classified into two types.

External Cable Modems- To connect the external Cable Modem to the computer, you need the Ethernet connection. Before connecting to the high speed cable modem, you need to add on Ethernet card to the computer. In addition, the external cable modems can be connected to the computer through the USB connection, However the USB based cable modems can connect to only one computer at a time.

Internal Cable Modems- The internal cable modems are add- in card that you can integrate within a computer or a set-top box.

Cable Modems communicate with a cable modem Termination System (CMTS) at the local cable television Company office. They can only communicate with a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) and not with any other cable modems on the cable television line.

Cable Modem Standards

Cable Modems use the modulation method to communicate with each other. This modulation method converts digital data from a computer to analog signals that can pass over a telephone line. The modulation methods are also known as modulation standards. The two cable modems communicating with each other must support the same modulation standard. Otherwise, they cannot communicate with each other.

As for troubleshooting a cable modem the same steps which is used in troubleshooting a modem needs to be followed and if the problem persists please contact your manufacturer for rectification of the problem.
